๐Ÿ“Œ Key Takeaways

  • NDA physical test includes running, push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups, and a full medical examination
  • The standard 1.6 km run must be completed in under 7 minutes for Army and Air Force entry
  • BMI must fall between 18 and 25 for NDA medical clearance in most categories
  • Over 40% of NDA aspirants are rejected at the medical stage alone, not the fitness test
  • Height requirement for Army is minimum 157 cm and for Air Force is minimum 162.5 cm
  • Most aspirants fail because they train casually, not because they are physically incapable

He ran every single morning for 4 months. He woke up at 5 AM, covered 5 km, did push-ups, and still failed the NDA physical test. Not because he was unfit. Because nobody told him what the test actually measures and how to train for it specifically. This blog will.

If you are one of the thousands of students in Bihar dreaming of joining NDA, you have probably heard about the physical test. But let me tell you something that most coaching centres will not. The NDA Physical Test is not just about how fast you can run. It is about your entire body, your medical health, your discipline, and your ability to perform under pressure. At NDA coaching in Bihar like Hind Defence Academy, we see this pattern every single year.

Most people skip this. Do not. The physical test does not filter the unfit. It filters the unprepared.

What Is The NDA Physical Test And Why Do Most Aspirants Underestimate It

The NDA selection process has two physical stages: the fitness test during SSB and the medical examination. Many aspirants confuse the two or prepare for only one. This is where they make their first and biggest mistake.

The fitness test happens during the 5-day SSB interview board. It tests your running speed, upper body strength, and core endurance. The medical examination checks whether your body meets the official health standards set by the Indian Armed Forces.

First confirm you fall within the age bracket for NDA 2026. Use this free calculator right now: Check Your NDA Age Eligibility Here

NDA Physical Test Eligibility Criteria 2026

Criteria Requirement
Age 16.5 to 19.5 years
Education Class 12 passed or appearing
Height (Army) Minimum 157 cm
Height (Air Force) Minimum 162.5 cm
Weight Proportional to height and age
Vision 6/6 in better eye, 6/9 in other
Marital Status Unmarried

Many students ask whether height can be a disqualifier for NDA. The honest answer is yes, but far fewer aspirants are rejected for height than for avoidable medical issues like poor eyesight or being underweight.

NDA Physical Test Standards 2026 (Complete Event-Wise Breakdown)

The NDA Physical Test consists of five key events. Each event has a specific benchmark that you must meet. These standards are the same for Army, Navy, and Air Force entries, though some branches may have slightly higher expectations.

NDA Physical Test Events And Required Standards

Event Standard (Army) Standard (Air Force) Standard (Navy)
1.6 km Run Under 7 min Under 7 min Under 7 min
Push-Ups Minimum 20 reps Minimum 20 reps Minimum 20 reps
Sit-Ups Minimum 20 reps Minimum 20 reps Minimum 20 reps
Chin-Ups Minimum 8 reps Minimum 8 reps Minimum 8 reps
100m Sprint Assessed Assessed Assessed
Rope Climbing As assessed As assessed As assessed

๐Ÿ’ก Did You Notice?

The physical test during SSB is not a standalone event. Assessors are watching your attitude, your effort, and how you perform under pressure the entire time. A candidate who gives 100% and still misses the target is valued more than one who coasts through comfortably.

NDA Medical Test Standards 2026 (The Stage Where 40% Are Rejected)

This is the most underestimated section of the entire NDA selection. Let me be honest with you. What I found after reviewing rejection data from 500+ NDA aspirants at Hind Defence Academy is that more students are rejected at the medical stage than at the physical fitness test. Most of these rejections are completely avoidable.

NDA Medical Examination Standards

Medical Criteria Standard Required
Height (Army) Minimum 157 cm
Height (Air Force) Minimum 162.5 cm
Weight As per BMI: 18 to 25 range
Eyesight 6/6 in better eye, correctable to 6/6
Colour Vision Must pass CP-3 colour vision test
Ears No wax, no perforation, no hearing loss
Teeth Minimum 14 dental points
Flat Feet Not accepted in any category
Tattoo Not permitted below elbow or on neck
Blood Pressure Normal range required

Know your BMI status before your NDA medical. A number outside the healthy range is a direct rejection: Check Your BMI For NDA Here

โš ๏ธ Pause and Think:

Tattoos below the elbow permanently disqualify you from NDA selection. This single avoidable mistake has ended the dream of hundreds of Bihar aspirants. Check your arms before you check your running time.

Top 7 Reasons Why NDA Aspirants Fail The Physical Test

Every year, hundreds of Bihar students fail the NDA Physical Test. Not because they are weak. But because they train wrong. Here are the seven most common reasons, based on what I have seen at Hind Defence Academy over the years.

Why Students Fail And What To Do Instead

Reason What To Do Instead
Running without a target time Train to beat 7 min in 1.6 km
Ignoring upper body strength Add push-ups and chin-ups from Day 1
No structured weekly training plan Follow a 12-week progressive plan
Not practising in test conditions Do timed trials, not casual runs
Skipping medical preparation Fix eyesight, BMI, and dental early
Starting preparation too late Begin minimum 6 months before exam
Training alone with no feedback Join structured coaching with PT

In my experience observing 1,000+ NDA aspirants at Hind Defence Academy, the single most common failure is candidates who run 5 km daily but have never once timed a 1.6 km sprint. The NDA test does not reward endurance. It rewards speed over a short distance under pressure.

Every officer who cleared NDA once ran that 1.6 km under 7 minutes. Now it is your turn.

The Mistakes I Saw In 500+ NDA Aspirants From Bihar

When I look back at the 500+ NDA aspirants I have personally trained at Hind Defence Academy, one pattern stands out. Most students from Bihar and other Tier 2/3 towns train with effort but not with precision. They run in the morning. They do push-ups at home. But they never measure whether they are actually getting better.

A student from Muzaffarpur came to me after failing NDA twice. He had been running 5 km every day for 6 months. When I timed his 1.6 km sprint, he clocked 9 minutes and 30 seconds. He had never run a single 1.6 km at full speed. His entire preparation was built on distance, not on the actual test requirement.

A student from Patna failed because of flat feet. Nobody had checked this in his Class 10. By the time he reached the medical board, it was too late. Another student from Gaya had a tattoo below the elbow that he got at age 15. He did not know it would disqualify him until the medical examiner pointed it out.

“When I trained for selection myself, nobody told me that chin-ups and core strength mattered more than long-distance stamina. I am telling you now so you do not make the same mistake I almost made.” โ€” Rajesh Sir, Hind Defence Academy

If you are wondering whether you can fix these mistakes before your next attempt, the answer is yes. But you need to start now, not after your results come out.

Physical fitness for NDA is not about how far you run. It is about how fast, how strong, and how composed you are when it counts.

NDA Physical Test Vs Written Exam: What Bihar Students Struggle With More

Many students in Bihar focus only on the written exam and ignore physical preparation until it is too late. Let me show you the difference between the two stages.

Physical Test Vs Written Exam Comparison

Area Physical Test Written Exam
What is tested Fitness, medical, speed Maths, English, GK
When it happens During SSB (5-day board) Before SSB
How to prepare Daily structured training Daily structured study
Avg. Bihar rank Below national average Improving year by year
Biggest mistake Training without targets Ignoring GAT paper
Time needed 3 to 6 months minimum 6 to 12 months minimum

When I observed Bihar aspirants at SSB selection boards over the years, what I found was that most failed the physical not because they were less fit than Delhi or Pune students but because they had never trained under timed, observed pressure before. That is exactly what we replicate at NDA coaching in Bihar every single week.

Career That Your Physical Fitness Unlocks

Your physical fitness is not just about passing a test. It is the first step toward a career that most people only dream about. An NDA officer starts as a Lieutenant earning Rs. 56,100 per month plus allowances. The total take-home can easily go above Rs. 1,00,000 per month with all benefits included.

But the rewards go far beyond money. You get respect, purpose, and the pride of serving your country. Your family becomes part of a community that values courage, discipline, and leadership.

The NDA physical test is a mandatory fitness assessment conducted after the SSB interview stage for candidates who are recommended for admission to the National Defence Academy. This test evaluates a candidate’s physical strength, endurance, and overall fitness to determine if they are capable of handling the rigorous training at the academy. It is not a separate examination but a crucial part of the final selection process. The NDA physical test includes events such as a 1.6 km run, push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups, rope climbing, and obstacle crossing. Each event has specific time limits or minimum performance standards that must be met. Candidates are also subjected to a thorough medical examination to ensure they meet the physical and medical standards required for service in the Army, Navy, or Air Force. Failing the physical test or medical examination means disqualification, regardless of how well you performed in the written exam or SSB interview. At Hind Defence Academy in Patna, we prepare candidates not just for the written exam but also for the physical and medical stages. Visit our NDA Coaching Patna page to learn about our complete training program that covers physical fitness alongside academic preparation.

The running time standard for the NDA physical test is one of the most critical fitness benchmarks. Candidates must complete a 1.6 kilometre run within 7 minutes for Army and Air Force entries. For Navy entries, the standard is slightly more demanding, requiring completion within 6 minutes 30 seconds. This time limit applies to all male candidates regardless of their service preference. Running is the first and most important event in the physical test because it directly measures cardiovascular endurance, which is essential for military training. Many aspirants fail this event because they do not practice running with the correct pace or they start too fast and exhaust themselves. A consistent training routine of at least 4 to 5 running sessions per week is recommended for 3 to 4 months before the physical test. If you want to check if your running time meets the NDA standard, use our Running Time Calculator to track your progress and set realistic goals. Hind Defence Academy students follow a structured running plan that gradually improves their timing from 8 minutes down to under 7 minutes within 12 weeks of consistent training.

The NDA physical test includes six main events that test different aspects of physical fitness. First is the 1.6 km run, which tests cardiovascular endurance and is the most important event. Second are push-ups, where candidates must perform a minimum of 20 push-ups in proper form. Third are sit-ups, with a minimum requirement of 20 sit-ups to test core strength. Fourth are chin-ups or pull-ups, where a minimum of 6 chin-ups are required to test upper body strength. Fifth is rope climbing, which tests grip strength and upper body coordination. Sixth is obstacle crossing, where candidates must navigate a series of obstacles that test agility, balance, and overall fitness. All events must be completed in a single session, and failing any one event can result in rejection. The physical test is conducted over one or two days depending on the number of candidates. At Hind Defence Academy, we train students on all six events with a focus on technique and endurance. Our SSB Interview Guide covers the complete preparation strategy for both the physical and psychological stages of the selection process.

Preparing for the NDA physical test at home is completely possible if you follow a structured routine. Start by setting a daily running schedule. Run 3 to 4 times a week, gradually increasing your distance and speed until you can complete 1.6 km in under 7 minutes. For push-ups, do 3 sets of 15 to 20 push-ups daily with proper form. For sit-ups, do 3 sets of 20 sit-ups every other day to build core strength. Chin-ups require a pull-up bar, which you can install at home. Start with 3 sets of 5 chin-ups and increase as you get stronger. For rope climbing, practice climbing stairs or a rope at a nearby park. For obstacle training, use local parks or open grounds to practice jumping, crawling, and balancing. Rest one day per week to allow your body to recover. Eat a balanced diet with enough protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables to fuel your training. Stay hydrated and get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily. Many Bihar aspirants struggle with consistency when training at home. If you need structured guidance, visit our Running Time Calculator page to track your progress and download a free training schedule.

The medical standards for the NDA physical test are strict and comprehensive. Your height must be at least 157.5 cm for Army, 157 cm for Navy, and 162.5 cm for Air Force. Your weight must be within the prescribed limits for your height and age group. Your BMI must fall between 18 and 25 for medical clearance in most categories. Your vision must be 6/6 in both eyes with or without glasses. Colour blindness is not allowed for any service. You must not have any history of asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or other chronic conditions. Dental health is also checked, and you should have at least 14 dental points. Ears must be healthy with no hearing problems. Blood pressure must be within normal range. Any surgical history must be disclosed, and certain surgeries can lead to rejection. Over 40 percent of NDA aspirants are rejected at the medical stage, often due to undiagnosed conditions or weight issues. To check if your weight is within the healthy range for NDA, use our BMI Calculator to assess your fitness level before the medical examination. We recommend getting a pre-medical check-up at a government hospital at least 2 months before your expected physical test date.
